Chapter Sixteen

Kassie

Kassie woke to the sound of the fire, cocooned in a blanket of warmth. She yawned and stretched. A glance at the clock told her it was morning. At 5:10, she didn’t expect that Chase was up yet, and her bladder was screaming for release. She quietly left the bed, padded into the bathroom, and closed the door. The click of the lock sounded loud in the quiet cabin. She finished her business and washed her hands.

Walking back to the bedroom, she couldn’t recollect when she had slept so deeply or, for that matter, so long. Between all the shifts at work and Emma being sick during the night, sleep was a fleeting thing. She walked over to the heavy curtains and took a peek outside. The sun wasn’t quite up through the mountains, but the faint light had started to break through. Kassie grabbed the quilt from the bed, dragged it to the window seat, and propped up the pillows to watch the sun rise over the mountains. The heavy curtains cocooned her into the cozy little hideaway.

Kassie sat in awe at the beauty that surrounded her. Just below was a vast expansive lake. The trees had turned the colors of fall. Dark oranges, reds, and yellows painted the landscape. In the distance, she could see the snowcapped mountains that surrounded the area. The serenity and peace that fell over the valley were breathtaking. She could sit there forever.

A knock at the door caught her attention as Chase held two steaming mugs in his hands. “Good morning,”

She gave him a cursory glance and pulled the blanket closer to her chest. Her gaze was still focused on the rising of the sun and the scene unfolding around her.

“I hope I didn’t wake you. This is just…” She turned her head back to him. “You were right. This is even more beautiful than when you took me on the Wheel.” She grinned.

He handed her the cup of tea, ensuring she could grasp the handle and not get burned.

“Thank you.” She inhaled the scent of the tea. “Mint?”

“Yes, it grows wild on the mountain. When we head to town, I’ll get you some local honey from our resident beekeeper. He has the best around. My mother used to get her honey from him and said it was amazing because it was made from the wildflowers here on the mountain.”

“Thanks, but I don’t want to be any trouble. I don’t know how long I’ll be here. This’ll be just fine.”

“Do you always do that?” Chase sat opposite her in the nook and looked out over the valley.

“Do what?” Her head cocked to the side as she held the steaming, fragrant tea with two hands and breathed in the scent wafting from the cup.

“Do you always refuse help from everyone?”

Kassie bristled at his question. “I’ve cared for Em and I for a long time now. I was doing just fine. It wasn’t until you and Derrick showed up that things started to fall apart.
